From the Moment They Are Born

A Parent’s Guide to Raising Healthy,
Happy Children

Pediatric wisdom from Dr. Blanca Fresno — a trusted voice in child and family care

About the Author

Meet Blanca I. Fresno, M.D.

I immigrated to the United States in 1981, beginning my journey in Miami, Florida, where my family was living at the time. After several challenging attempts, I was accepted into a pediatric residency program in Flint, Michigan, in 1985. That marked the true beginning of my “American journey.”

The cultural shift was profound. I found myself navigating not only a demanding medical path, but also the emotional process of shedding pieces of my Argentinian identity in order to assimilate into a new way of life. That transition, while difficult, deepened my empathy—especially for the immigrant families I now serve. I know firsthand the courage it takes to begin again in a new place.

I spent three formative years in Michigan, where I became both a physician and a mother. My first son, Sidney, was born during my internship—the very first year of my American residency. That experience shaped not only my approach to medicine but also my unwavering dedication to the families and children I care for today.

Common Questions

Need Help? We've Got Answers for You

Motherhood is a beautiful journey—but it can also be overwhelming, uncertain, and emotional. Inspired by From the Moment They Are Born by Dr. Blanca I. Fresno, we’ve gathered heartfelt answers to some of the most common questions mothers ask during the earliest days of parenting.
Let these words offer you comfort, clarity, and reassurance that you’re not alone.
Bonding doesn’t always happen in the first moment—and that’s okay. Emotional connection can take time, especially after a difficult birth or if you’re still healing. As Dr. Blanca I. Fresno reminds us, every journey is unique, and love grows in quiet, tender ways. Just by being present—holding your baby, listening, soothing—you are building the bond. Trust that it will come.
Yes, completely. In the days after delivery, your body goes through a major hormonal shift. It's normal to feel teary, anxious, or even lost. This is known as the baby blues—and it usually fades within two weeks. If the feelings deepen or linger, it may be postpartum depression. You are not alone, and there is help. Asking for support is a sign of strength, not weakness.
There is no one “right” way to be a mother—only your way. You will make mistakes. We all do. But love, consistency, and presence are what truly matter. As Dr. Blanca I. Fresno says in her book: “Forgive yourself; you are human. Your mistakes are bridges toward transformation and growth.” You’re already enough—because you care.
It’s okay to listen, but you don’t have to follow every piece of advice. You know your baby best. Dr. Blanca I. Fresno encourages mothers to lovingly examine what they’ve inherited—and gently create new truths that reflect their own wisdom and values. Your voice is valid. Let it guide you.
Yes—deeply, and without guilt. Grieving your past self while stepping into motherhood is normal. You are changing in every way, and it’s okay to miss who you were, even as you grow into who you’re becoming. Joy and loss can live in the same heart. That doesn’t make you less loving—it makes you human.
